KC Christmas
I (Lisa) first saw the work of KC Christmas on Instagram a couple summers ago. Danielle Krysa’s Art For Your Ear podcast had recently began the short lived #AFYEcamp series, which were themed art projects based on that week’s podcast. I was scrolling the Instagram feed under #AFYEcamp and came across something unlike anything I had ever seen, a beautifully rendered portrait featuring sprinkles! I experienced my own moment of “damn, I wish I had thought of that.” Upon further research, I discovered more work of an intelligent, hardworking, and insanely talented young woman, who was creating clever collages and funny paintings.
KC was an obvious choice for our first blog feature. She was our first follower on Instagram and first submission. Thank you for believing in our project and being featured!
KC Christmas is a contemporary painter and collage artist living and working in Aiken, South Carolina. Known for her portraits and food art, she combines the styles of the Old Masters with relevant topics. Her collages merge art history with fanciful food and explore food as a central foundation for relationships. Both her collages and paintings can be found in stores and homes across the United States and her collage work was recently featured in TAPAS magazine. She currently works from her home studio as both an artist and illustrator. When she's not painting, you can find her drinking tea, eating something sweet or binge watching the Crown (or maybe all at once).
Like us, KC is a sucker for sweets (no pun intended). When describing her work, she mentions "Sweet things always seem to find their way into my work. Maybe it's my obsession with sweets or the fact that I always associate good times and happiness with sweets and food. Throughout my collages and paintings, I want to explore our relationship between comfort foods with a bit of snark. Inspiration comes from old photos or paintings when they seem to be overly serious. By inserting food or coffee, it creates a whole new story surrounded by sweets." Whether it's spray painted onto the painting or subtly hinted in a cake message, she loves creating art that makes people smile and leaves a sweet taste.
