Mixed media pieces with amazing textures, saturated colors, and they are created with discarded materials?! The Post-Consumerism work of Tiffany Gholar utilizes discarded materials and turns them into something new and beautiful. We had to learn more about Tiffany and her work!
Tiffany Gholar is a Chicago based artist working in a variety of mediums. In addition to her Post-Consumerism series, she also has two series titled The Doll Project and Recessionism. She received her BA in interdisciplinary art studies from The University of Chicago in 2001, and later studied interior design at Harrington College of Design, also earning her MA in painting from Governors State University. She has shown work at The Chicago Children's Museum, The Chicago Center for Green Technology, Harold Washington Library, and The Adler School for Professional Psychology. In addition to painting, Tiffany works as a freelance interior designer, published her novel A Bitter Pill to Swallow, and has been a champion on Jeopardy!
Tiffany shares more about her Post-Consumerism series:
I find things with interesting textures and think, I want to make something out of that. The objects I find are often otherwise useless: containers, packing materials, packaging, paint that dried on my palette. They are the residue of our disposal, one-time-use material culture. By making art with these objects, I imbue impermanent things with a new sense of permanence and purpose. For the rhythmic interplay of light and shadow on corrugated cardboard, the dreamlike diaphanous nature of plastic shopping bags, the brilliant hues of the bottles that make our packaged beverages seem all the more appealing, every assemblage in the series is infused with its own peculiar beauty. And I Call this style of working with by by-products of the products we buy Post-Consumerism.
